Except this time! I won a free copy of Painter 9.5 at the Gnomon live event this weekend. Can I get a Woo-hoo!!
Another great Gnomon Live event. Highlights include Amazing concept artists/motivational speakers Ian McCaig and David Krentz, Marvel comic artist who likes to draw Batman Dave Finch (yes, there is irony there nerds), Character artist Ron Lemen, Amazing CG artist Steven Staglberg and storyboard artist phenom Dan Milligan.
I have mixed feelings about Craig Mullins talk. I wish there had been more painting, or maybe a more impressive result. It is nice to see how he starts a composition though.
Lopsie Schwartz had good career advice but seemed a little unprepared or uneasy about giving a presentation. The Mudbox demos by Ian Joyner and Fausto De Martini were plagued with technical problems although they did make me seriously consider working with Mudbox. I loves the Zbrush but Mudbox looks like its easy to use and it does what I need to quickly.
I picked up at least 3 or 4 immediate workflow improvement tips and many ideas for improving my overall approach to working with character design.
I have a fondness for this space suit girl I've been working with, but the composition sucks, mainly because its so, you know, just a face. I do like the texture, the lighting, the colors and her expression. I like the idea of her in a big bulky space suit, perhaps she's naked inside (aren't we all?). So I think I will take a cue from Ron Lemen's talk and see if I can develop the character through various quick sketches to establish her visage and then work her into a more developed composition.
I also ran into Puddnhead, he says he has some schematics of the cyclops caharcter he may be able to lend me. Might make my life easier...
So now I'm going to go play with Painter...
