cyclops model update

Here is an update to the model I'm building based on Puddnhead's cyclops design. I've started adding some rough tubes which is helping the model to look a lot better. Still not happy with the legs, they look like stilts. The tubes are done in Maya using NURBS extrusions along a path. I prefer that metod to Modo's extrusion tools. The first 3 images are the model in Maya, the full view has the tubes imported back into Modo...

I haven' worked on this since before Insomania. Hopefully I can get back to it soon.

Insomaniamania

wow.

Insomania last weekend was freakin' awesome. What can I say? Lots of demos with great artists, met some great people, saw a great band, it was great. Most of the art I created was crap but t was useful crap. I will post some sketches when I get a chance to scan them. I'm in DC for the holidays, staying with my brother. In the mean while, here are my photos...

spot the dork! (hint, its not the guy with the beer)

OK, my images suck, and clearly my camera needs a cleaning. but it was loads of fun. Apparently the secret to a great band is not having guitar players. The clown band was quite good, very original. I need to track down the real name of the band.

My ego was crushed by the artists at the workshop but what doesn't kill you can only make you more dillusional.

The higlight was when I was doing life drawing sketches sitting next to Kevin Llewellyn while we watched Michael Hussar. It was like a double master class! what a bargain! Of course Kevin git up and soem dude took his place but it was cool for a while. The Massive Black/Conceptart.org community is very cool and now I have faces to put with the names.

Well, updates to my various projects are on hold. I'm at Prologue this week in Venice beach. It's a bit of a drive from West Hollywood to Venice but conisdering I spent most of 06 working from home I guess I can suck it up and deal with the commute.

more modelling

updates to the puddnhead cyclops model. I redid the legs, trying to get the feet more loke dog feet. This is a lower detail version so no toes. Still struggling with the seta on the back.

cyclops armor

Here's a quick update on the cyclops, working out the armor. Not exactly the same as the drawing, just trying to keep the spirit of it. This is just the rough shapes. Eventually I would like to do something like Fausto De Martini .

spaceGirl

here's the version of the space girl I did last night. I like the image but I want to put this character in a stronger composition just to push myself.

I never win anything!

Except this time! I won a free copy of Painter 9.5 at the Gnomon live event this weekend. Can I get a Woo-hoo!!

Another great Gnomon Live event. Highlights include Amazing concept artists/motivational speakers Ian McCaig and David Krentz, Marvel comic artist who likes to draw Batman Dave Finch (yes, there is irony there nerds), Character artist Ron Lemen, Amazing CG artist Steven Staglberg and storyboard artist phenom Dan Milligan.

I have mixed feelings about Craig Mullins talk. I wish there had been more painting, or maybe a more impressive result. It is nice to see how he starts a composition though.

Lopsie Schwartz had good career advice but seemed a little unprepared or uneasy about giving a presentation. The Mudbox demos by Ian Joyner and Fausto De Martini were plagued with technical problems although they did make me seriously consider working with Mudbox. I loves the Zbrush but Mudbox looks like its easy to use and it does what I need to quickly.

I picked up at least 3 or 4 immediate workflow improvement tips and many ideas for improving my overall approach to working with character design.

I have a fondness for this space suit girl I've been working with, but the composition sucks, mainly because its so, you know, just a face. I do like the texture, the lighting, the colors and her expression. I like the idea of her in a big bulky space suit, perhaps she's naked inside (aren't we all?). So I think I will take a cue from Ron Lemen's talk and see if I can develop the character through various quick sketches to establish her visage and then work her into a more developed composition.

I also ran into Puddnhead, he says he has some schematics of the cyclops caharcter he may be able to lend me. Might make my life easier...

So now I'm going to go play with Painter...

Cyclops model

I'm working on a 3D version of puddnhead's cyclops design. here is the rough version of the interior "meaty" part of the cyborg. Modo + Zbrush.

Doing the Gnomon live event this weekend, lots of drawing and painting lectures.

space face

so I reckon she's headed out to space now...
