14,835

14,835 is my sales rank today. Either i sold a lot of books or people returned a lot of other books? who knows. If anyone out there is visiting my site after getting my book, please feel free to email me (kellerrific_AT_yahoo.com) with questions and comments. I will be happy to help out. I think its a great book but I'm aware that it ain't perfect.

Houdini

My Houdini class finished up yesterday. My final project was not as cool as I would have liked, all the other students had great stuff to show. I don't feel too bad though, it came out cool enough and it did demonstrate an understanding of how Houdini works. I really had no time to spend on my project (Prologue and Digizyme are both keeping me busy with good ol' Maya) but I do feel like I can improve it in the future. X-ray Halperin was a finatstic teacher, one of the best classes I've taken at Gnomon (next to John Brown's sculpture classes and Puddnhead's creature design course). I feel comfortable now in Houdini and I can start to create things...useful things. I will postt a tutorial that shows how I created procedural DNA once I get a chance. I'm reading Will Cunningham's "The Magic of Houdini" right now. This guy knows how to write a software book. He may be my new software-book writing hero. I'm also learning Python, although that's going slowly. really all I'm doing now is rendering...I love the smell of fat in the morning....

2nd LAnniversery

Well, this week marks the second Anniversery of our arrival in La La land. Zoe and I will celebrate with brunch at Manny's cafe on fairfax this sunday - post LA fitness work out 'natch. Its been a good two years. I've grown much as an artist and experienced many things I would not have been able to experience anywhere else. Plus I've met cool, talented, and interesting people.

Also, I got a prerelease copy of my new book "Maya Visual Effects: The Innovator's Guide". Its pretty awesome, very pleased with how it looks. I hope it does well.

Someday I will get back to my own work, plus i have unfinished tutorials to post.

I can stop any time I want...

I'm debating getting a new laptop. Its the old windows versus mac debate, made even more complicated by the whole boot camp on the mac thing. It's really a cheap versus expensive debate. Not sure which way I will go, I really should not be spending money, but then again I have 2.5 jobs going at once right now.

So the Oscars happened. I pitched in at prologue, creating the 3D elements for the transitions. What we actually created and delivered looked cooler than what hit the screen during showtime, not sure why they dropped our specular and ambient occlusion passes, maybe it was a technical thing, maybe it just didn't show up. Overall it happened and it looked good.

This summer should be interesting. My book will be coming out any day now and I'll most likely be showing it off at the Wiley booth at SIGGRAPH. Zbrush 3 is coming out on May 15th, can't wait for that. I may take Scott Spencer's class again just to get caught up with the new features, plus I like his class. In June I will be a guest speaker at a Maya class taught at Harvard Medical School - Maya for molecular/structural biologists. That should be really fun, i can't wait. i will be talking particles I believe. Drew Berry may be a second guest speaker, maybe even on the same day.

Work at Prologue is chugging along. Looking forward to being able to talk about it but that won;t be for a while. It is very cool though...

There's a chance I still ahve my generic Zbrush head on my BOXX machine since I used it in my particle painter tutorial. Unfortunately its a high res version. maybe Zbrush will remember they subdivision levels even though its an obj, we'll see. I've been trying to catch up in my Houdini class. I have been working so much that i have fallen behind in my class project.
