Airplane sketches

Some sketches done on the plane and in New Jersey over Christmas. These were all done from photographs:

Also, my New Year's Resolution is to draw one skull a day for 2008. I'll just post the ones that don't suck:

While in New Jersy I picked up The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing by Anthony Ryder. Very cool, changing many of my bad habits based on teh first few chapters. Not for everyone, but it seems suited to 3D modelers since he slowly works the figure sketches from simple blocked in lines to finer details, much like I model in ZBrush. His specific technique is helping me to focus on sillhouette and negative space. I can see how some people would react negatively (some of the Amazon reviews). However you have to build your own technique by combining many different methods. I should note, I've only tried this technique on photographs, not on actual models.

Getting back into drawing again, been out of practice for a while. For Christmas I got the Color Theory and Comic Book Pencilling DVDs from Gnomon. Only 4 DVDs behind now!

Here's the Medusa with some proto snakes. I redid the head from scratch and will probably do it one more time as I write this chapter...

medusa fixes

ok, I made some quick edits in Pshop to fix the structure of the face. I'll do a paint over later...

This young man was kind enough to pose for a reference for the image...

The Wake of the Medusa

Here is a sketch of the medusa character I'm making for chapter 6 of Introducing ZBrush:

Its a little goofy so far, hope it gets better!

Here's the first pass at the model, I think the pose + expression in the sketch are more interesting:

Working on the nakes now. Making them is one thing, making them and then explaining the method to a beginner is something else...

BTW Mucinex is the greatest drug in the world! I can breathe for the first time in a week!
