Lappy 2008

Ok, I finally did it. after a year or more of hesitation I finally bought a new laptop - a Macbook pro 15" glossy actually. Yeah, I did it! Its all shiny and glowy and warm. My old powerbook recently turned 7 and is kinda falling apart. However 7 years is quite a good run for a laptop. Sad to see the old laptop retire but I'm excited about the possibility of portable Maya and ZBrush...

The dawn cracked hard like a bullwhip

I just spent the night at work, nursing some renders. Sunset blvd, so pretty at 7am with the sky the color of Pepto Bysmol. I spent some time watching Tom Waits videos on You Tube. I can see some of the biggest problems with my portrait. His nose needs to be much thinner and slightly smaller. Right now that is closer to my nose. Also the outside corners of his eyes need to be raised and his eyes need to be smaller and closer together. If I ever get free time I'll try and make these changes.

Recent projects i worked on include...

- The Chase commercials that look just like the IBM commercials - the ones with the black and white footage and the "Chase what Matters" slogan and the "Secret Agent Man" music - I developed the particle effect at the end with Sean Wherli over at Prologue.

- I did something for American Idol whihc has not shown yet, can't say more than that. it may not survive the editing process anyways!

- The end title animation to "Enchanted". i worked on that with Adam Newman at YuCo last summer.

- I worked on some of the preliminary models for a new 02 commercial, Adam Newman took that over (sucker...)

I'm at imaginary Forces right now, we'll see what happens next week...

Putting on the Dog...

He's geetting slowly closer, the eyes still need much work.

As for the dog, check out the original Bloopatone from this photo session we had with a pro photographer. She's a skinny little thing, but lets hope we all look this good when we reach her age.

odds and ends

what's odd? well, you'll see there are no posts of skull drawings. I said I would post the skull sketches that don't suck. I have been sketching them, usually three or four every so many days. the only problem is thay all suck. The biggest problem I'm having is good old fundamental perspective drawing issuise. Note the skull posted earlier, all kinds of problems in that one I'm still trying to resolve. maybe I need to draw a cube a day for a year!

Other odd thing - Microsoft is poised to buy Yahoo. I've had a Yahoo email for years and I really like it but I'm sure MS will screw it up if the deal goes through. Therefore I'm switching to Google. I haven't updated my links yet but from now on you can reach me at bloopatone "AT" gmail.com. (Replace "AT" with @,I'm trying to cut down on spam).

What's ending? Well, not so much ending but finished! I've completed writing on Introducing ZBrush!! I'm working on Edits now, color images, and DVD material. Preorder it now from Amazon (Link in previous post). New cover image is in the works.

Scott Spencer is almost done with his book too. order both together! For the money they are the best way to learn ZBrush. As much as I love training DVD, I think you'll find thge amount of info in these two books is like 6 or 7 training DVDs!!! AND you get a DVD with each book that is full of quicktime movies and example files. How are the books different? Introducing ZBrush is for new users. its designed to teach anyone who wants to learn, regardless of digital art experience, how to work in ZBrush. It covers both 2.5 D painting and 3D sculpting. It goes through the interface and exlpores the entire tool set. Each chapter is spplit between explanatory material and excercises. Most projects are small, some are large, most are easy, some are challenging. If you read the book and go through the excercises and practice what you learn, you will become proficient in ZBrush very quickly. At least enough so that you can tackle...

Scott Spencer's book which is an indepth exporation of the art of digital character sculpting in ZBrush. Scotts book is an art book covering topics such as anatomy, composition, color theory, character ideation, the whole shebang. Scott is a lead sculptor at Gentle Giant Studios with years of traditional sculpting as well as digital sculpting experience. I've taken several classes with him. he knows his stuff. Buy these books and set aside some time to practice and you'll be Zbrushing like a pro before you know it!!

OK, that's my schpeel. I'm at Imaginary Forces this week working on feature film stuff. More to come....
